Wise is a global technology company building the best way to move and manage the world’s money. The Wise for Banks team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer II to help shape the technical direction of the systems powering Wise’s global payment network. The role operates at the intersection of engineering, product and partnerships, driving the architecture, scalability and reliability of infrastructure that enables banks to connect seamlessly to Wise.
With deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, Kafka and PostgreSQL, you will lead the design of highly available services and event-driven systems that power partner integrations and financial flows at scale. You will influence architecture across Wise’s ecosystem of more than 700 microservices, helping teams make sound technical decisions and ensuring systems remain maintainable, observable and resilient as the platform grows.
Beyond hands-on technical contributions, you will act as a technical authority and multiplier for the organisation. You will mentor engineers, raise engineering standards and guide teams towards best practices in microservices architecture, domain-driven design and distributed systems. You will also contribute to cross-team initiatives, represent Wise Platform and help align engineering efforts with company-wide goals.
At Wise, collaboration, curiosity and shared ownership are valued. You will develop deep expertise in correspondent banking and interbank payment networks, helping shape the systems that enable banks and businesses to move money globally with speed, transparency and reliability. You will regularly contribute to technical discussions, architecture reviews and strategic planning across teams.
The Partner Cash Management team builds and maintains the infrastructure that enables banks to fund, hold and manage liquidity within interbank payment networks. Its platform helps partners optimise liquidity, support seamless payments and manage foreign exchange exposure at scale. As a Software Product Engineer, you will play a critical role in evolving this platform to support the next generation of global financial partnerships.
The role requires extensive hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot in production environments; strong experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems and microservices architectures; experience designing event-driven systems using Kafka or similar technologies; strong experience modelling and building systems with PostgreSQL or other relational databases; knowledge of domain-driven design principles; a track record of architecting and delivering complex, high-scale systems; strong technical leadership and cross-team influence; and effective communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
You will lead the design and development of highly scalable and resilient Java and Spring Boot services within Wise’s microservices architecture. You will apply domain-driven design to model complex financial domains, drive the development and adoption of event-driven architectures using Kafka or similar messaging systems, and architect and optimise relational database systems such as PostgreSQL. You will collaborate with Product, Implementation, Solutions Engineering and Business Development to support partner integrations and expand the Wise payment platform globally.
You will provide technical leadership across teams, influence architecture decisions, contribute to platform-level improvements and help maintain high engineering standards. You will participate in code reviews, architecture discussions and technical planning, championing best practices in distributed systems, reliability and maintainability. You will mentor and support engineers, helping grow technical capability while fostering a culture of learning, ownership and collaboration.
Wise welcomes candidates who have some of the listed skills and are eager to learn. Further requirements include experience building backend systems using Java and Spring Boot or similar languages and frameworks; strong experience with large-scale microservices architectures and distributed systems; experience with Kafka or similar messaging platforms; knowledge of relational databases including schema design, query optimisation and data integrity; experience applying domain-driven design; a strong product mindset and passion for user experience; excellent problem-solving skills; the ability to work independently and collaboratively; strong communication and leadership skills; and experience mentoring engineers and raising technical standards.
