London defined the modern fintech era: Revolut, Monzo, Starling Bank, Wise, Checkout.com, GoCardless, Thought Machine, OakNorth Bank, Zopa, Zilch and Marshmallow all started here, and the banks they set out to compete with are a short walk away in the City and Canary Wharf. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, a distinctive mix of regulatory reform, TechCity, deep capital markets and financial expertise created the conditions for new models in banking, payments and, later, open banking to emerge and scale, and to this day, no city connects financial infrastructure, technology and risk capital as tightly.
